Breeding Bird Survey

The Wildlife Survey Unit offers a number of breeding bird survey products, these are detailed below:

  • Ornithological Clerk of Works: This survey is designed to ensure that developers comply legally with Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act. It is undertaken during the breeding season to assess the presence of nesting birds within a site prior to construction or ground clearance works commencing. For detailed information on the length of time it takes certain species to incubate eggs, raise young and fledge the nest consult the British Trust for Ornithology's Bird Facts website

  • Breeding Bird Survey: This is a two visit transect survey designed for monitoring change; it's result is a list of species present and numbers of each species. This survey is suitable for post-construction monitoring or assessing changes at sites adjacent to developments

  • Common Birds Census (3 visit): This is a scaled-down version of the standard Common Birds Census and is a methodology specifically put forward by Scottish Natural Heritage to survey large areas for lowland bird species in relation to to survey lowland bird species in relation to birds and wind farm developments

  • Common Birds Census (6 visit): This is a territory mapping technique suitable for an impact assessment, this provides a list of species and the number of breeding units. This information can then be used in EcIA and Environmental Statements, and when compared with regional and national breeding populations can give accurate assessments of the ornithological importance of the site
